The Herpetological Society of Cyprus (HSC) is an association that was founded and has been operating in Cyprus since 1990. The association is approved by the Registrar of Associations and Foundations with registration number 880.
The goal of the HSC is the highlighting, study and protection of the herpetofauna in Cyprus. Part of the work of the association includes presentations, educational seminars, nature outings, study and research of reptiles as well as other actions related to the information and awareness of the public to the reptiles of the island.
With its foundation in 1990 the HSC created the first reptile and amphibian exhibition in a place near the holy monastery of Agios Neophytos in Tala, Paphos. The exhibition was later moved close to the Baths of Aphrodite while for a period of 16 years (1999-2009) the exhibition operated in the village of Skouli, Paphos. In that time more than 350.000 visitors had the chance to meet the lizards and snakes of Cyprus up close and be informed for the uniqueness of some of them, the usefulness of certain snakes, mostly in rat control, but also the danger of the Cypriot viper.
